Shape Shell Cordovan

Shell Cordovan
Description Shell cordovan is a rare and labor-intensive type of leather, known for its durability and unique qualities, setting it apart from common cowhide. Sourced from the hindquarters of horsehide, it comes from a specific membrane found between two skin layers in the rear of the horse. The process of tanning cordovan is incredibly complex, involving over 100 steps and taking up to six months to complete. Due to this demanding production, very few tanneries still make shell cordovan. Because it is much smaller in size compared to calfskin, it’s best suited for smaller leather goods or footwear that requires multiple smaller pieces. Its rarity and durability make it a prized material for such items. The main characteristics of shell cordovan leather include: 1. Exceptional Durability: Shell cordovan is highly durable and resistant to wear, making it ideal for long-lasting products. 2. Tight Grain Structure: The leather has densely packed pores, which make the surface smooth and almost poreless. 3. Water and Stretch Resistance: It naturally resists water and stretching though it’s not entirely waterproof, maintaining its shape and integrity over time. 4. Unique Aging and Patina: Rather than creasing, shell cordovan develops ripples and acquires a rich, beautiful patina with age, enhancing its appearance. 5. Smooth Finish: The leather has a polished, glossy finish, giving it a luxurious look and feel. 6. Complex Tanning Process: It undergoes a long, labor-intensive tanning process that takes several months, making it a high-quality and rare material. 7. Limited Size: Shell cordovan comes from a small area of the horsehide, meaning it is only available in limited quantities, typically suited for smaller leather goods or footwear.
